What this trial studies
This study aims to evaluate the impact of 20-minute second-level Reiki sessions over four consecutive days on pain intensity and quality of life among patients undergoing hemodialysis. It employs a pre-test-post-test, double-blind, randomized controlled design, comparing outcomes between a Reiki group receiving actual treatment and a sham group receiving no real intervention. The study seeks to address the common and debilitating symptoms experienced by patients with end-stage renal disease, particularly focusing on pain management and overall well-being.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients over 65 years old who have previously received first-level Reiki and have a satisfactory cognitive assessment score.
Not a fit: Patients who are not willing to participate, have cognitive impairments, or are undergoing other forms of dialysis or treatments may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a non-invasive complementary therapy to alleviate pain and enhance the quality of life for patients undergoing hemodialysis.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific application of second-level Reiki in this context may be novel, other studies have explored Reiki's benefits in various patient populations, showing promising results.
