What this trial studies

This study investigates how surgical stabilization of rib fractures affects short-term clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients. It focuses on measuring factors such as mortality, duration on mechanical ventilation, and length of stay in the intensive care unit and hospital. Additionally, the study examines how patient age and overall injury severity influence these outcomes. The hypothesis is that older patients with more severe injuries will experience worse outcomes following surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients at the University Hospital Muenster with coded serial rib fractures treated between 2019 and 2023.

Not a fit: Patients with pathological rib fractures due to suspected malignancy will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve understanding of how to optimize treatment for rib fractures in older patients or those with severe injuries.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have explored surgical stabilization of rib fractures, but the specific focus on age and injury severity in this context may provide novel insights.
