Education to improve drinking habits and oral hygiene for people having bariatric surgery
Effekt av Pasientundervisning på Drikkevaner og Munnhygiene Hos Pasienter Som gjennomgår Fedmekirurgi
This project will test three types of patient education—a custom website, clinician-led sessions, or free dental-hygiene samples—to see which best helps people having bariatric surgery improve drinking habits and oral care.

What this trial studies
Many patients experience worse oral health after bariatric surgery due to physiological changes and altered eating and drinking patterns. In this randomized intervention, patients eligible for bariatric surgery are assigned to one of three education strategies: a customized website, clinician-led group education, or distribution of dental-hygiene product samples. Outcomes include knowledge level, self-reported drinking patterns, self-perceived oral health, and reported oral hygiene routines, with follow-up to detect changes after surgery. The trial recruits patients at Norwegian hospitals and compares which education format most effectively supports oral-health behaviors in this population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults eligible for bariatric surgery at a Norwegian hospital who can give informed consent and have sufficient language skills to use the education materials are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with advanced dental disease needing immediate specialist treatment, those who cannot understand the educational materials, or those lacking consent capacity may not benefit from these interventions.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the best education approach could help patients avoid enamel erosion, cavities, and gum problems by improving drinking habits and daily oral hygiene.
How similar studies have performed: Educational programs have improved oral hygiene in other populations, but randomized comparisons of education formats specifically in bariatric surgery patients are limited.
