Early nurse-led education to reduce heart risk after a heart attack
Effect of Early Educational Intervention on Cardiovascular Risk Factors After Acute Coronary Syndrome
This trial tests whether extra nurse-led education and follow-up soon after a heart attack helps adults improve diet, exercise, quit smoking, and feel more confident managing their heart health.

What this trial studies
Adults who recently had an acute myocardial infarction and underwent urgent cardiac catheterization at the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular Materno Infantil are assigned to either a nurse-led education and support program or to standard care. The intervention combines motivational and individualized interviewing, heart-healthy dietary education, tobacco-cessation strategies, promotion of physical activity, and emotional health management delivered in in-person nursing consultations. Outcomes include patient self-efficacy for self-care and changes in cardiovascular risk factors such as diet, activity levels, and smoking status measured during follow-up. Participants must speak Spanish and be able to attend in-person visits at the study center.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who recently had an acute myocardial infarction requiring urgent cardiac catheterization under the CODICAN protocol at the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular Materno Infantil are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients who cannot communicate in Spanish, lack the capacity to follow recommendations, have an unfavorable clinical prognosis or prolonged hospitalization, or cannot attend in-person consultations are unlikely to benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help patients lower their cardiovascular risk and feel more confident managing their health after a heart attack.
How similar studies have performed: Similar nurse-led education and cardiac rehabilitation approaches have shown benefits for self-care, risk-factor control, and smoking cessation in prior studies.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Patients must have suffered an Acute Myocardial Infarction. * Participants must have undergone an urgent cardiac catheterization. * Specifically, this includes patients who received coronary reperfusion strategies following the activation of the CODICAN protocol (assistance for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction) within the study environment. Exclusion Criteria: * Patients with little or no knowledge of the Spanish language that prevents effective communication or reading of educational resources. * Patients unable to understand their participation or follow health recommendations independently. * Patients with an unfavorable clinical prognosis or those requiring hospitalization for a period exceeding established limits. * Patients unable to attend in-person nursing consultations due to personal reasons or place of residence
