Diet, zinc, inflammation, and body composition in multi-ethnic reproductive-age women in Jakarta

The Relationship Between Dietary Patterns and Hair Zinc Levels With Body Composition, TNF-α, and Blood Pressure in Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) With Multi-Ethnicities in Jakarta: A Cross-Sectional Study

Observational Indonesia University · NCT07170904

This project will see if usual dietary patterns and hair zinc levels are linked to body composition, inflammation (TNF-α), and blood pressure in women aged 19–49 who live in Jakarta.

What this trial studies

This cross-sectional observational study enrolls women of reproductive age from five ethnic groups in Jakarta for a single assessment visit. Dietary intake is measured using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and a 3-day food diary. Body composition is measured with a BOD POD (weight, height, fat mass, fat-free mass) and blood and hair samples are collected to measure TNF-α and hair zinc concentrations. The study examines associations between dietary patterns, zinc status, inflammation markers, and blood pressure across a multi-ethnic urban population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are women aged 19–49 who have lived in Jakarta for at least six months, are currently menstruating (not menopausal), are not pregnant or breastfeeding, belong to the Minangkabau, Sundanese, Javanese, Betawi, or Chinese ethnic groups, and do not have chronic diseases or take medications that affect nutrient status.

Not a fit: Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have chronic diseases, follow medically prescribed diets, take medications that alter nutrient status, or have conditions that interfere with accurate body composition measurement are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If links are confirmed, the findings could help guide dietary and zinc-related recommendations to improve body composition, reduce inflammation, and support blood pressure management in reproductive-age women in Jakarta.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies in other populations have reported links between dietary patterns, zinc status, and inflammation, but comparable data are limited for multi-ethnic urban Indonesian women.
