What this trial studies

This project aims to help heavy smokers make informed decisions about lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography (CT). In the initial phase, a prototype decision aid will be updated to align with current screening guidelines and will undergo cognitive testing with participants. The updated aid will then be pilot-tested for acceptability among smokers. Participants will engage in interviews and complete questionnaires to assess their knowledge and attitudes towards lung cancer screening.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are men and women aged 55 to 80 who are current smokers or have quit smoking within the past 15 years.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of lung cancer will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could empower smokers to make better-informed decisions regarding lung cancer screening, potentially leading to earlier detection and improved outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using decision aids for cancer screening, indicating that this approach is promising and not entirely novel.
