What this trial studies
This observational study analyzes video encounters between healthcare providers, patients, and families to create a shared decision-making tool for scoliosis treatment. Patients considering surgery will have their clinical visit recorded, and these videos will be sent to a specialized group at Mayo Clinic for analysis. The study will track patient outcomes through electronic medical records for two years following their treatment decision, although no specific outcome forms will be collected as part of the study. The goal is to enhance the decision-making process for patients facing surgery versus observation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 13 and older with a scoliosis curve between 40 and 65 degrees and a Risser score greater than 2.
Not a fit: Patients with a Risser score of 0 or 1, non-ambulatory scoliosis patients, or those aged 12 and under may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this tool could empower patients and families to make more informed decisions regarding scoliosis treatment options.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies in shared decision-making have shown promise in other medical fields.
