Detecting worsening COVID-19 through voice and breathing patterns

COVID-19: Early Detection of Worsening by Voice and Respiratory Pattern Characteristics

Observational Direction Centrale du Service de Santé des Armées · NCT05892549

This study is testing a mobile app that listens to voice and breathing patterns in COVID-19 patients to see if it can spot early signs of worsening symptoms and help identify those who might need extra care.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify early signs of respiratory deterioration in COVID-19 patients by analyzing voice and respiratory pattern characteristics using a mobile application called COVOICE. The focus is on detecting a hyper-inflammatory response known as a cytokine storm, which can lead to severe complications around day 7 of the illness. By monitoring these patterns, the study seeks to predict which patients may require intensive care, potentially allowing for better resource allocation in healthcare settings. The approach leverages technology to provide a non-invasive and accessible method for early detection.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are French-speaking individuals who are affiliated with a social security system and own a mobile phone capable of using the COVOICE application.

Not a fit: Patients who are intubated, hospitalized in intensive care, or incapable adults may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enable timely interventions for COVID-19 patients, potentially reducing the need for intensive care and improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using voice analysis for respiratory conditions has shown promise in other diseases, this specific application for COVID-19 is novel and has not been extensively tested.
