Detecting heart valve disease and heart failure in a diverse community using cardiac ultrasound
London Valvular Heart Disease and Reduced Ejection Fraction Detection in a Multi-ethnic Community Using Cardiac Ultrasound
This study is testing if training primary care staff to use quick heart ultrasounds can help find heart valve disease and heart failure earlier in older people from different backgrounds.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the prevalence of heart valve diseases and left ventricular dysfunction in a multi-ethnic community, particularly focusing on individuals aged 65 and older. The study will train non-expert staff in primary care to perform abbreviated cardiac ultrasounds to facilitate early detection of these conditions. By improving access to diagnostic tools, the study seeks to enhance management strategies for heart valve disease and heart failure, ultimately reducing hospital admissions and improving patient outcomes. The findings will contribute valuable data to address the healthcare needs of a diverse population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 65 and older living in a multi-ethnic community.
Not a fit: Patients with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, Vascular Dementia, or those receiving palliative care may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection and better management of heart valve disease and heart failure, improving patient outcomes and reducing hospitalizations.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using trained non-expert staff for cardiac ultrasound, indicating a promising approach for early detection of heart conditions.
