Deriving human embryonic stem cell lines from embryos tested for genetic abnormalities
The Derivation of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines From PGD Embryos
This study is trying to create new human stem cell lines from embryos that were found to have genetic issues so that researchers can use them to learn more about diseases and develop new treatments.

What this trial studies
This study focuses on isolating human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) from embryos that have been diagnosed as abnormal through preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The approach involves using embryos that would typically be discarded after IVF procedures, thereby providing an ethically viable source of hESCs for research. These stem cells have the potential to proliferate indefinitely and differentiate into various cell types, making them valuable for studying developmental biology and potential therapies for degenerative diseases. The research aims to create new hESC lines that can be shared with scientists globally for further investigation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are couples who have undergone IVF and have embryos diagnosed as abnormal through PGD that they do not wish to use for family building.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have embryos available for donation or who are not undergoing IVF will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this research could provide a significant resource for studying diseases and developing new treatments using human embryonic stem cells.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have successfully derived hESC lines from surplus embryos, indicating a promising approach for this research.
