The Effect of Deep Breathing Added to Core Stability Exercises in the Treatment of Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

NA · Beni-Suef University · NCT07262294

What this trial studies

This interventional study will enroll adults with stable ankylosing spondylitis who are on the same medical treatment and not in other rehabilitation programs. Participants will perform a core stability exercise program either with or without guided deep breathing, with baseline and follow-up measurements. Outcomes will include spinal mobility, posture, respiratory (pulmonary) function, strength, and physical function. The protocol targets correcting thoracic and cervical posture and improving respiratory mechanics as a complement to standard medical care.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are men and women aged 20–45 with stable ankylosing spondylitis for at least three months who are receiving the same medical treatment and have not participated in other rehabilitation programs in the past six months.

Not a fit: Patients with other systemic or neurological disorders, recent changes in medication, unstable disease, or who cannot attend the program in person are unlikely to benefit from this specific intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, adding deep breathing to core stability exercises could improve posture, lung function, and overall mobility for people with ankylosing spondylitis.

How similar studies have performed: Exercise programs including range-of-motion and strengthening have shown benefit in ankylosing spondylitis, but the specific combination of deep-breathing with core stability exercises has been little studied and is relatively novel.
