What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the relationship between mental health disorders and obesity in patients referred for bariatric surgery. It focuses on developing a comprehensive screening tool to assist healthcare professionals in assessing the mental health of these candidates. The study will evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in this population and investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms linking mental health and obesity. By characterizing patients with physical-mental multimorbidity, the study seeks to provide tailored recommendations for their management.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older with a BMI of 25 kg/m² or higher who are referred for obesity management.
Not a fit: Patients who are incapacitated or protected adults as defined by law will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved mental health support and outcomes for patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in addressing the mental health aspects of obesity, but this specific approach to multimorbidity is relatively novel.
