What this trial studies
The team will use community-based participatory methods with patients, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers to adapt the CDC-recognized Group Lifestyle Balance (GLB) program into a version tailored for Hispanic/Latino people post-stroke and available in English and Spanish. They will then run a single-arm pilot enrolling 24 participants (12 English speakers and 12 Spanish speakers) who are at least 12 months post first stroke and have BMI ≥25. Outcomes including weight change and secondary measures will be collected at 3, 6, and 12 months, while feasibility and fidelity to the GLB content will also be tracked. The goal is to describe effects and participant adherence to the culturally modified GLB-CVA Latino program.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18–85 who identify as Hispanic/Latino, are at least 12 months after a first stroke, have BMI ≥25, are medically able to participate in a weight-loss program, and are fluent in English or Spanish are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People with contraindications to physical activity, low cognitive function, current inpatient/residential rehabilitation status, pre-existing eating disorders, pregnancy, or who are not fluent in English or Spanish are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help Hispanic/Latino stroke survivors lose weight, improve dietary and physical activity habits, and reduce risk of related chronic diseases.
How similar studies have performed: The GLB program has produced weight-loss benefits in the general population and has been used with people after stroke, but a culturally adapted GLB specifically for Hispanic/Latino stroke survivors has not been widely tested.
