Comparing two types of fluids for kidney transplant recovery

The Comparison Between Ringer Lactate Solution and Normal Saline with Dextrose Water in the First Week Post-Operative Period of Deceased Donor and Living Donor Kidney Transplantation

Phase 3 Interventional King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital · NCT06030609

What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates the effects of Ringer lactate solution (RLS) versus normal saline solution (NSS) with dextrose water (D5W) on electrolyte balance in kidney transplant recipients during their first week post-surgery. It is a randomized controlled trial involving 60 participants who will be assigned to receive either RLS or NSS with D5W. The primary outcome measured will be serum bicarbonate levels on day 5 after transplantation, while secondary outcomes will include various serum electrolytes and the incidence of delayed graft function.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult kidney transplant recipients aged 18 and older at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing multiorgan transplantation or those with known allergies to RLS or NSS may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve electrolyte management and kidney function in post-operative kidney transplant patients.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored fluid management in kidney transplantation, this specific comparison of RLS and NSS with D5W is novel.
