Comparing two surgical approaches for hip fractures
The Hip Fracture Surgical Approach Trial
This study is testing if a new muscle-sparing surgery for hip fractures can help patients recover with less pain and better movement compared to the traditional surgery.

What this trial studies
The Hip Fracture Surgical Approach Trial aims to compare the traditional direct lateral approach to hemiarthroplasty with a new muscle-sparing technique known as SPAIRE in patients with femoral neck fractures. The study will evaluate whether the SPAIRE approach, which preserves more muscle and tendon tissue, results in improved outcomes such as reduced pain and better mobility compared to the standard method. Participants will be monitored for recovery and functional results following their surgeries. This trial is crucial for determining the most effective surgical technique for this common injury.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals over 50 years old who have sustained a femoral neck fracture and require hemiarthroplasty.
Not a fit: Patients with previous hip implants in the same hip or those in a terminal state with limited life expectancy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved surgical outcomes and quality of life for patients recovering from hip fractures.
How similar studies have performed: While the SPAIRE approach is a novel technique, similar studies comparing surgical approaches for hip fractures have shown promising results in improving patient outcomes.
