What this trial studies

This randomized, three-arm trial will assign adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain to one of two brief interventions (a single 2-hour online session of Brief Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement or Empowered Relief) or to the standard 8-week Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement delivered as eight 2-hour online sessions. Trained facilitators will teach research-backed pain-management techniques in each condition. Participants will complete short surveys at baseline, immediately after the training, and at 2, 6, 12, 24, and 36 weeks to track pain and related outcomes. The trial excludes people with cancer-related pain, recent surgery or pain injections, prior formal mindfulness training, or unstable illness.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults age 18 or older with chronic musculoskeletal pain who average at least 3/10 pain in the past week, can follow English instructions, and are willing to complete the online sessions and follow-up surveys are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with cancer-related pain, recent surgery or recent pain-relieving injections, unstable medical illness, inability to consent, or prior formal mindfulness/Empowered Relief training may not benefit from enrolling.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could allow many patients to get meaningful pain relief from a single 2-hour online session instead of committing to eight weeks of treatment.

How similar studies have performed: Prior trials of mindfulness-based programs and Empowered Relief have shown benefits for chronic pain, but direct comparisons of single-session interventions versus an eight-week MORE program are limited.
