Comparing tidal volume settings in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care

Comparison of Tidal Volume Between Pediatric Anaesthesia and Paediatric Intensive Care Patients: Retrospective Study

Observational Brno University Hospital · NCT03877354

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the tidal volumes used in pediatric patients during general anesthesia and compare them to those used in pediatric intensive care. By retrospectively analyzing data from anesthesia records and intensive care unit charts, the study will focus on tidal volume settings, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), and driving pressure in relation to the inspired oxygen fraction (FIO2). The goal is to gather insights on current practices and improve ventilation strategies for pediatric patients. The study will include data from patients who were mechanically ventilated between January 1, 2018, and January 31, 2019.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pediatric patients who were on mechanical ventilation in either the anesthesia department or the intensive care department during the specified study period.

Not a fit: Patients outside the specified age limits or those with insufficient data will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved ventilation strategies that enhance outcomes for pediatric patients requiring mechanical ventilation.

How similar studies have performed: While protective ventilation strategies have been established in adults, this study addresses a gap in knowledge regarding pediatric patients, making it a novel approach.
