What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effectiveness of rivaroxaban compared to enoxaparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in morbidly obese patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery. The study is an open-label randomized controlled trial that aims to determine which medication is more effective in reducing the risk of post-operative blood clots. Given the rising prevalence of obesity and the associated risks of VTE, this research addresses a critical public health issue. Participants will be monitored for VTE incidence following their surgical procedures to assess the outcomes of each treatment.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 20-60 years with a BMI between 35-50 kg/m² who are classified as ASA physical status class I to III.

Not a fit: Patients with severe cardiac disorders, chronic renal failure, liver cirrhosis, or major psychological disorders may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved prophylactic strategies for preventing life-threatening blood clots in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have explored the use of anticoagulants for VTE prevention in surgical patients, but this specific comparison of rivaroxaban and enoxaparin in the context of bariatric surgery is relatively novel.
