Comparing prilocaine and bupivacaine effects on elderly patients during spinal anesthesia

Comparison Between the Effect of Prilocaine vs Bupivacaine on Hemodynamics in Spinal Anesthesia for Geriatric Patients Undergoing Endoscopic Urological Surgeries: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Phase 3 Interventional Cairo University · NCT06165679

What this trial studies

This study aims to compare the effects of prilocaine and bupivacaine on hemodynamic stability in geriatric patients undergoing endoscopic urological surgeries. It will involve administering equipotent doses of both local anesthetics to assess their impact on blood pressure and heart rate. The study focuses on patients aged 65 and older, who are classified as ASA I and II. By evaluating these two anesthetics, the research seeks to identify which may provide better hemodynamic outcomes for elderly patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients aged 65 and older scheduled for endoscopic urological surgeries with ASA I and II classification.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those with known allergies to local anesthetics, bleeding disorders, or those classified as ASA III and VI.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved anesthetic practices that enhance the safety and comfort of elderly patients during surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While data comparing prilocaine and bupivacaine in elderly patients is limited, similar studies in younger populations have shown varying results, indicating that this approach may provide new insights.
