Comparing preoperative cardiac clearance with the G60 Orthopedic Hip Frailty Index to predict outcomes after hip fracture surgery
Cardiac Clearance vs G60 Hip Frailty Index in Trauma
This project will test whether preoperative cardiac clearance predicts short-term postoperative mortality better than the G60 Orthopedic Hip Frailty Index for people aged 60 and older who need surgical treatment for hip fractures.

What this trial studies
This observational project will create a data repository from the Methodist Dallas Medical Center Trauma Registry containing preoperative cardiac clearance data, phenotype information, and the Orthopedic Hip Frailty Score for patients aged 60 and older who undergo surgical management for hip fractures. Investigators will link these predictors to short-term postoperative mortality to compare how well cardiac clearance measures and the G60 frailty index forecast outcomes. No interventional treatments are given; data are collected from routine clinical care and chart abstraction. The repository is intended to support quality improvement analyses and future observational work to improve perioperative risk stratification and resource allocation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 60 or older who are included in the Methodist Dallas Medical Center Trauma Registry with a documented orthopedic injury managed surgically.
Not a fit: Patients younger than 60, those with non-surgical orthopedic injuries, or individuals whose care is not captured in the registry are unlikely to benefit directly from this project's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this could help clinicians better predict short-term postoperative mortality and guide preoperative planning and allocation of resources for older adults with hip fractures.
How similar studies have performed: Frailty scores such as the Orthopedic Hip Frailty Score have shown predictive value for postoperative mortality in prior registry studies, but combining these scores with preoperative cardiac clearance predictors in this specific setting is relatively novel.
