Comparing pain modulation in localized and widespread chronic low back pain

Determining if Conditioned Pain Modulation Differs Between Individuals With Localized Versus Widespread Mechanical Pain Hypersensitivity in Chronic Low Back Pain

Ahram Canadian University · NCT05972395

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the body's natural pain modulation system in individuals suffering from chronic low back pain (CLBP) by comparing those with localized pain to those with widespread pain. Researchers will measure pain inhibition through pressure pain thresholds before and during cold water hand immersion. The hypothesis is that individuals with widespread pain will exhibit poorer pain modulation compared to those with localized pain. The findings may lead to more personalized approaches in managing chronic pain based on the type of pain experienced.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-60 with chronic low back pain lasting more than three months and an average pain intensity of at least 4 out of 10.

Not a fit: Patients with known low back pathologies, previous lumbar surgery, neuropathic low back pain, or comorbid generalized pain conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance personalized pain management strategies for patients with chronic low back pain.

How similar studies have performed: While studies have documented impairments in pain modulation in chronic low back pain populations, this specific comparison between localized and widespread pain is novel.
