Comparing infective endocarditis in intravenous drug users and non-drug users
The Incidence, Clinical Characteristics and Outcome of Infective Endocarditis Among Intravenous Drug Abusers Versus Non-Drug Abusers.
This study looks at how infective endocarditis affects people who use intravenous drugs compared to those who don’t, to see what differences there are in their health outcomes.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of infective endocarditis (IE) among intravenous drug abusers (IVDA) compared to non-drug abusers. It will assess the psychiatric and microbiological profiles of these patients, as well as the rates of complications and outcomes associated with medical treatment or surgical intervention. The study seeks to highlight the increased risk of IE in IVDA, particularly in the context of the ongoing opioid crisis and its implications for healthcare. By analyzing these factors, the research aims to fill gaps in the current literature regarding this high-risk population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adult patients over 18 years old with a diagnosis of definite or possible infective endocarditis.
Not a fit: Patients who have been ruled out for infective endocarditis after diagnostic workup will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of infective endocarditis in intravenous drug users, potentially reducing morbidity and mortality rates.
How similar studies have performed: While some studies have explored the relationship between intravenous drug use and infective endocarditis, this specific comparative approach is relatively novel and under-researched.
