Comparing ECG results in COVID-19 patients in different positions

Comparison of Prone Position and Standard Electrocardiogram in COVID-19 Patients: A Prospective Study in Specialized COVID-19

Observational Khon Kaen University · NCT05047835

This study is testing how lying on your stomach or back affects heart readings in COVID-19 patients with breathing problems to see if it helps doctors spot heart issues better.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to compare the electrical parameters of electrocardiograms (ECGs) in COVID-19 patients positioned either prone or supine. It focuses on patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and investigates how the prone position may affect ECG readings, particularly in relation to new-onset cardiac conditions associated with COVID-19. The study will analyze differences in various ECG parameters, such as amplitude and duration of specific intervals, and will involve cardiologists in diagnosing conditions based on the ECG results from both positions.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are COVID-19 patients aged 18 to 80 who are admitted to a specialized ward and exhibit pulmonary infiltration.

Not a fit: Patients who are intubated, in cardiac arrest, or unable to undergo ECG due to anatomical defects or skin issues may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of cardiac complications in COVID-19 patients and improve diagnostic accuracy.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on the specific effects of prone positioning on ECG in COVID-19 patients, the approach of studying cardiac implications in ARDS has shown promise in other contexts.
