What this trial studies
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization at three different sites: the internal jugular vein, subclavian vein, and innominate vein. It addresses the challenges faced by critical care physicians when attempting to cannulate patients with specific conditions that complicate traditional methods. By comparing these approaches, the study seeks to identify the most successful technique for patients with respirophasic variation in vein size. The trial will be conducted in multiple centers to gather a diverse patient population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients requiring central venous catheterization who exhibit respirophasic variation in the cross-sectional area of their jugular veins.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those with previous failed attempts at non-ultrasound guided techniques may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the success rate and safety of central venous access in critically ill patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown high success rates for ultrasound-guided cannulation, but this specific comparison of sites is novel.
