Comparing CT scans and colonoscopy for detecting colorectal tumors

The Comparison of Diagnostic Yield Between Routine Computed Tomography and Colonoscope in Detecting Colorectal Tumors in Patients Who at Risk of Colorectal Cancer

Hat Yai Medical Education Center · NCT06165328

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of routine computed tomography (CT) versus colonoscopy in detecting colorectal tumors in patients at risk for colorectal cancer, specifically those over 50 years old with a positive FIT test. Participants will undergo a CT scan of the abdomen followed by a colonoscopy the next day to assess the diagnostic yield and any procedure-related adverse events. The study seeks to address the low rates of colonoscopy screening due to limited medical resources by comparing these two diagnostic methods.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals over 50 years old who have tested positive on a FIT test and have normal platelet counts.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, have uncontrolled chronic conditions, or significant coagulopathy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a more accessible and effective screening method for colorectal cancer, potentially increasing early detection rates.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown varying success in comparing CT and colonoscopy for colorectal cancer detection, but this specific approach is relatively novel in the context of limited medical resources.
