What this trial studies

This study compares the effectiveness of continuous spinal anesthesia (CSA), single-shot spinal anesthesia (SSSA), and general anesthesia (GA) in patients over 60 years old undergoing elective surgical repair of a fractured neck of femur. A total of 105 patients were randomly assigned to one of the three anesthesia groups. The CSA group received multiple injections of bupivacaine through a catheter, while the SSSA group received a single injection. The GA group was administered isoflurane anesthesia, and various parameters such as blood pressure, pain scores, and medication needs were monitored throughout the procedure and recovery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients over 60 years old scheduled for elective surgical repair of a fractured neck of femur with an ASA grade of ≤III.

Not a fit: Patients with ASA grade >III or those with uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, or other serious health conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved pain management strategies for elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown varying success with different anesthesia techniques, but this specific comparison is less commonly tested.
