What this trial studies
This study evaluates a new approach to monitor diabetic maculopathy and pre-proliferative diabetic retinopathy using community-based optometrists and virtual consultations with hospital ophthalmologists. The aim is to determine the feasibility and acceptability of this method for patients with diabetes, as well as its potential impact on healthcare resources and costs. By utilizing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in community settings, the study seeks to improve early detection and management of these eye conditions, which are significant complications of diabetes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults with diabetes who have been referred for review of suspected diabetic maculopathy or pre-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old, those with diagnosed diabetic macular oedema, or individuals with proliferative diabetic retinopathy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance early detection and treatment of diabetic eye conditions, potentially preserving vision for many patients.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in utilizing community resources for managing diabetic eye conditions, indicating potential for success.
