What this trial studies

This intervention focuses on addressing high rates of maternal mortality and adverse pregnancy outcomes among Black postpartum patients, particularly those experiencing preeclampsia. The study will adapt an existing community health worker program to provide tailored support and education on cardiovascular disease prevention. Participants will be randomized to receive either standard care or enhanced support from community health workers. The pilot aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of this intervention in improving health outcomes for this underserved population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are Black postpartum patients aged 16-56 who have experienced adverse pregnancy outcomes and plan to deliver at UAB Hospital.

Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as Black, are not experiencing adverse pregnancy outcomes, or are currently incarcerated may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve postpartum health and reduce long-term cardiovascular risks for Black women experiencing adverse pregnancy outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promise in using community health workers to improve health outcomes in underserved populations, indicating potential success for this approach.
