Collecting lung sound recordings using Eko digital stethoscopes in clinic

Data Collection Using Eko Digital Devices in a Clinical Setting

Observational Eko Devices, Inc. · NCT07270744

This project will try to teach computer programs to recognize wheeze, crackles, rhonchi, stridor, rales, and cough from stethoscope recordings in adults with suspected or diagnosed lung conditions and in people with normal lungs.

What this trial studies

This observational effort collects chest and back audio recordings with Eko digital stethoscopes from adult patients at a single clinical site. Participants include adults with suspected or diagnosed lower respiratory conditions and healthy adults without adventitious lung sounds. The recordings will be used to train and validate binary machine-learning classifiers for specific adventitious sounds and to examine how sound type and location map to pulmonary diagnoses. Patients on mechanical ventilation or those unable to undergo multiple recordings are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (18+) who can give consent and either have suspected/diagnosed lower respiratory conditions or are normal with no adventitious lung sounds, and who can tolerate multiple chest and back recordings.

Not a fit: Patients on mechanical ventilation, those unable to have multiple recordings due to mobility or other limitations, or those unable/unwilling to consent are excluded and unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the work could enable computer-assisted tools that help clinicians detect and classify abnormal lung sounds more reliably, improving diagnosis and monitoring.

How similar studies have performed: Similar machine-learning approaches using digital stethoscope recordings have shown promising results in research settings but are not yet widely implemented in routine clinical care.
