Closing the appendix stump with clips versus ties during laparoscopic appendectomy
Results of Laparoscopic Appendectomy With Application of Clips Versus Ligature for Stump Closure: A Comparative Study
This study tests whether using metal clips or tying sutures to close the appendix stump during laparoscopic appendectomy leads to fewer complications and lower costs for people with acute appendicitis.

What this trial studies
This is a prospective comparison of two techniques for closing the appendiceal stump during laparoscopic appendectomy: application of clips versus ligature (tying sutures). Patients of any age or sex who present with uncomplicated acute appendicitis at Sohag University Hospital are enrolled, while those with complicated appendicitis, unstable cardiac or pulmonary conditions, or intraoperative suspicion of Crohn's disease or a mass are excluded. Outcomes include technical feasibility, postoperative complications such as fecal fistula, and economic considerations. Procedures are performed at a single center and data are collected during the perioperative and early postoperative period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients of any age or sex presenting to the emergency department with uncomplicated acute appendicitis who are treated at Sohag University Hospital.
Not a fit: Patients with complicated appendicitis, unstable cardiac or pulmonary problems, or those found to have suspected Crohn's disease or an intraoperative mass are excluded and may not benefit from the findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the trial could identify a safer and more cost-effective method to close the appendix stump in uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy.
How similar studies have performed: Previous surgical series comparing clips, ligatures (endoloops), and staplers for stump closure in uncomplicated appendicitis have shown mixed but generally comparable safety and cost profiles for clips versus ties.
