Checking kidney function in children with epilepsy
Assessment of Kidney Function in Patients With Epilepsy

What this trial studies
This is a cross-sectional observational project at Sohag University Hospital that measures kidney health in pediatric patients with idiopathic epilepsy. Investigations include serum creatinine, electrolytes, CBC, ABG, urinalysis, liver function tests, EEG findings, and abdominal ultrasound. Clinical data on demographics, seizure type and frequency, and current antiepileptic drug regimens are collected at enrollment. The goal is to estimate how common renal abnormalities are in this group and whether they relate to specific AED use.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Children aged 1 month to 15 years with idiopathic epilepsy who attend Sohag University Hospital and whose caregivers can provide medical history and consent are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Infants younger than 1 month, people older than 15 years, children with seizures from CNS infection, or those with non‑idiopathic epilepsy would not be eligible and are unlikely to benefit from these specific findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the project could identify kidney problems earlier in children on antiepileptic drugs so clinicians can adjust treatment or monitoring to prevent further damage.
How similar studies have performed: Previous observational work has linked several AEDs to nephrolithiasis, tubular dysfunction, and nephrotoxicity, so this approach builds on existing evidence by adding focused pediatric data.
