Cannabis use patterns and social and health effects in young adults

Trajectoires Individuelles de Consommation de Cannabis en Situation Habituelle et Observations de Leurs Modalités en Contexte Écologique

Observational Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) · NCT07063589

We will follow 18–24-year-olds who use cannabis at least weekly for two years to see if different patterns of product type, frequency, and dosage are linked to social and health outcomes.

What this trial studies

This is a two-year observational cohort that enrolls regular cannabis users aged 18–24 and uses a mobile application to collect repeated information on frequency of use, product types, and cannabinoid dosages. Participants complete periodic surveys and mobile-based consumption logs to map how use patterns change over time. The study links these longitudinal use trajectories with social and health measures to characterize potential consequences during this developmental period. No experimental treatments are given; the project aims to generate detailed real-world data to inform prevention and harm-reduction strategies.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Young adults aged 18–24 who use cannabis at least one day per week, can read English or French, have a mobile phone, and are willing to comply with study procedures for two years.

Not a fit: People currently receiving or planning treatment for cannabis use disorder, those with a medical authorization for cannabis, or those who cannot commit to the study period (for example due to planned extended absence) are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the study could identify risky consumption patterns and inform targeted prevention or harm-reduction efforts for young adults.

How similar studies have performed: Previous longitudinal studies have linked heavy youth cannabis use to adverse outcomes, but detailed multi-factor tracking of product types and cannabinoid dosages over time in this age group is relatively novel.
