What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effects of inhaling hydroxy gas, a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, on symptoms associated with Long COVID. Participants will self-administer the treatment at home using a machine that delivers the gas through a nasal cannula for at least 2 hours a day over a 3-week period. The study employs a randomized, placebo-controlled design, where participants will alternate between receiving hydroxy gas and normal air, with a washout period in between. The primary aim is to determine if this treatment can alleviate pain, breathlessness, and fatigue in patients suffering from post-acute COVID-19 syndrome.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals experiencing moderate to severe pain, breathlessness, or fatigue due to Long COVID who live within an hour's drive of the Oxford Brookes campus.

Not a fit: Patients with pre-existing secondary diseases, chronic respiratory conditions, or those who have required ICU treatment for COVID may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could provide a new, accessible option for patients struggling with Long COVID symptoms.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using inhaled gas for treatment is innovative, similar studies on Long COVID treatments have shown mixed results, making this a novel exploration.
