Blocking the airway to improve heart surgery outcomes

Effect of Topical Airway Block on Hemodynamic Stability Post Induction of Anaesthesia in Cardiac Surgeries

Phase 4 Interventional Ain Shams University · NCT06395727

This study is testing if using a lidocaine spray to block the airway can help heart surgery patients have a smoother anesthesia experience and recover better by reducing the need for strong painkillers.

What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effects of a topical airway block using lidocaine spray on hemodynamic stability during the induction of anesthesia in patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. The study aims to reduce the reliance on high doses of opioids, which can lead to hemodynamic instability, by targeting the sensory pathways involved in the stress response to intubation. By minimizing opioid use, the trial seeks to enhance patient safety and improve recovery times post-surgery. The approach is based on the understanding that managing hemodynamic changes is critical during the induction phase of anesthesia.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old who are scheduled for elective cardiac surgery.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit include those with severe cardiac conditions, such as aortic dissection or severe valve stenosis, and those undergoing emergency surgeries.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to safer cardiac surgeries with fewer complications related to hemodynamic instability.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of airway blocks in anesthesia is established, this specific approach targeting hemodynamic stability in cardiac surgery is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
