What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief behavioral economic intervention designed to promote smoking cessation among smokers in Hong Kong. The study introduces an 'opt-out' referral approach, where participants are automatically connected to cessation services unless they choose to decline. This method is expected to increase the uptake of smoking cessation services, which are often underutilized. Additionally, mobile messaging based on behavioral economics principles will be used to encourage smokers to initiate quitting and utilize these services.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are Hong Kong residents aged 18 and older who smoke daily and are willing to engage with cessation services.

Not a fit: Patients currently participating in another smoking cessation program or using cessation drugs or nicotine replacement therapy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly increase smoking cessation rates among smokers in the community.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that active referral strategies can effectively promote smoking cessation, suggesting that this novel opt-out approach may also be successful.
