Bean bag tossing to improve balance and walking in children with Down syndrome
Effects of Bean Bag Tossing Game Using Static and Dynamic Surface on Balance and Gait in Children With Down Syndrome
This trial will test whether playing a bean bag tossing game on a wedge versus on a balance board can help improve balance and walking in children with Down syndrome aged about 7–12.

What this trial studies
This is a randomized clinical trial enrolling 36 children with Down syndrome who have measurable balance deficits and can stand and walk independently. Participants will be randomly assigned to play a bean bag tossing game either on a wedge or on a balance board three times per week for four weeks, 30 minutes per session. Outcomes will be measured before and after the intervention using the Berg Balance Scale and the GALLOP gait/balance scale. Guardians must provide consent and children with seizures, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, or cardiac anomalies are excluded.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children with Down syndrome about 7–12 years old who have a defined balance deficit, can understand and follow simple commands, and can stand and walk without repeated falling.
Not a fit: Children with active seizures, significant neuromuscular diseases, major cardiac problems, or who cannot follow instructions or walk independently are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the intervention could improve dynamic balance and walking stability in participating children, potentially making daily mobility safer and easier.
How similar studies have performed: Play-based and balance-board training studies in children with developmental motor delays have shown modest improvements in balance and gait, but bean-bag tossing as a specific intervention is not widely tested.
