Barts Children's Environmental Health Clinic
The Barts Charity Children's Environmental Health Clinic
This service will try personal and home pollution monitoring plus tailored exposure-reduction plans for children aged 4–17 with chronic respiratory conditions to see if those steps lower their environmental exposures.

What this trial studies
Children referred by the paediatric asthma team will have baseline clinical data taken from their records and will complete questionnaires and clinic interviews. They will wear personal environmental monitors and receive a home environmental assessment to measure exposures and identify sources. Families will be given a personalised exposure report with recommended mitigation strategies based on patterns and behaviours, then monitoring will be repeated after changes are made. The study compares different mitigation methods and stores quantitative and qualitative data securely on Queen Mary University of London/Barts Health servers.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Children aged 4–17 with a diagnosed chronic respiratory condition who are referred by the paediatric asthma team and whose family can consent, attend clinic visits, allow home assessments, and use the study devices and English-language materials.
Not a fit: Children who cannot use the monitoring devices, cannot attend the initial hospital visit, or cannot allow a home environmental assessment are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, participants could reduce harmful pollutant exposures and related symptom triggers through tailored, practical changes at home.
How similar studies have performed: Previous home-based air-quality interventions have shown some reductions in indoor pollutant levels and symptom improvement, but combining personal exposure monitoring with tailored clinic reports is a relatively new approach.
