Baduanjin exercise for glaucoma in older adults
Is There a Response of Glaucoma to Baduanjin Exercise in Elders?
NA · Cairo University · NCT07163676
This trial will try Baduanjin, a gentle qigong exercise, with older adults who have high-tension primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension to see if daily practice helps their eye pressure or symptoms.

What this trial studies
Baduanjin, a traditional qigong exercise, will be taught to one group of older adults with bilateral high-tension primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension for 60 minutes a day (except Fridays) over eight weeks. Participants are assigned into two groups of 30; the intervention group performs supervised Baduanjin daily while the control group is placed on a waitlist. Clinical measures such as intraocular pressure and symptom changes will be compared before and after the eight-week period. The single-center trial is conducted at Cairo University in Giza and excludes people with cataract, diabetes, cardiac disorders, or obesity.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Older adults with bilateral high-tension primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who can attend daily sessions and do not have cataract, diabetes, cardiac disease, or obesity.
Not a fit: People with cataract, diabetes, cardiac disorders, obesity, other glaucoma types, or advanced disease may not benefit or are excluded from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this could offer a low-cost, low-risk exercise option that may lower intraocular pressure or improve symptoms in older adults with glaucoma.
How similar studies have performed: Some small studies of aerobic and qigong-like exercises have shown transient reductions in intraocular pressure, but specific evidence for Baduanjin in glaucoma is limited.
