What this trial studies
This is a retrospective observational review of adult patients (≥18 years) with babesiosis confirmed by blood smear or PCR who were treated at CHU Strasbourg and associated centers from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2024. Investigators will extract clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome data to describe epidemiology, presentation, severity, and risk factors such as splenectomy, immunosuppression, and advanced age. The effort addresses underdiagnosis and limited case numbers by aggregating cases to clarify typical and severe clinical courses. Findings aim to inform clinicians and public-health planning for tick-borne babesiosis in metropolitan France.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older with babesiosis confirmed by blood smear or PCR who were treated at participating French centers between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2024 and who did not refuse participation.
Not a fit: People without laboratory-confirmed babesiosis, children, or those treated outside the participating centers are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this dataset.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the project could help clinicians recognize and manage babesiosis earlier and guide public-health measures to reduce severe outcomes in high-risk patients.
How similar studies have performed: Small case series and regional reports exist, but comprehensive national or multicenter datasets for human babesiosis in France remain limited.
