What this trial studies
This observational study aims to document vascular changes in the posterior segment of patients suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). A total of 30 patients with IBD will be recruited from the tropical department of Tanta University Hospital. The study will involve comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations, including OCTA and fundus photography, to evaluate the retinal capillary plexus and choriocapillaries. Patient demographics, symptoms, and treatment history will also be recorded to correlate findings with disease severity.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, either newly diagnosed or with chronic disease currently undergoing treatment.
Not a fit: Patients who have undergone recent ophthalmological surgery or have significant refractive errors or retinal diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of retinal complications in IBD, leading to better management and treatment strategies for affected patients.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is relatively novel in the context of IBD, similar studies have shown promise in assessing retinal changes in other systemic diseases.
