Assessing Peripheral Arterial Disease in Patients with Deep Vein Thrombosis
The Frequency of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Patients with Deep Vein Thrombosis of the Lower Limbs
This study looks at how common Peripheral Arterial Disease is in people with unprovoked Deep Vein Thrombosis and compares it to those with other types of DVT to see how their heart health is related.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the frequency of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and cardiovascular risk factors in patients diagnosed with unprovoked Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limbs. It compares these patients with those who have provoked DVT or cancer-related DVT. The study will also investigate the relationship between Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) across different patient groups. Conducted at the Sant'Orsola Malpighi Polyclinic in Bologna, it includes both retrospective and prospective patient data.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 years with a diagnosis of unprovoked, provoked, or cancer-related DVT in the lower limbs.
Not a fit: Patients with upper limb DVT, superficial venous thrombosis, or DVT associated with central venous catheters may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of cardiovascular risks in DVT patients, potentially leading to improved management strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While studies on DVT and PAD exist, this specific observational approach focusing on unprovoked DVT is relatively novel.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age \> 18 years * Diagnosis of unprovoked, provoked, or cancer-related DVT * Diagnosis of DVT in the lower limbs, both proximal and distal, subjected to compression ultrasound within 6 months of diagnosis * Ability to provide informed consent Exclusion Criteria: * Diagnosis of upper limb DVT or DVT in other locations, if not concurrent with lower limb DVT * Diagnosis of superficial venous thrombosis (SVT), if not concurrent with lower limb DVT * Diagnosis of DVT associated with central venous catheters (CVC) * Presence of epithelial or basal cell carcinomas, as they are associated with a low risk of deep vein thrombosis
