Assessing neutrophil profiles in patients undergoing surgery to understand infections
Neutrophil Phenotypic Profiling and Surgical Site Infections in Surgical Patients
Boston Children's Hospital · NCT04773457
This study is testing how certain immune cells behave in patients having surgery to see if it can help predict and prevent infections after their operations.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the functional profiles of neutrophils in patients scheduled for elective open gastrointestinal or spine fusion surgeries. By analyzing these profiles, the study seeks to identify potential associations with the occurrence of surgical site infections (SSIs), which are significant contributors to hospital-acquired infections. The research will involve monitoring patients before and after their surgical procedures to gather data on neutrophil behavior and infection rates.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients scheduled for elective open gastrointestinal surgical procedures or spine fusion surgeries.
Not a fit: Patients on chronic immunosuppressive drugs or with preexisting immunodeficiency diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved prevention strategies for surgical site infections, enhancing patient outcomes and reducing hospital costs.
How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research into neutrophil profiles and infections, this specific approach to linking neutrophil profiling with SSIs in surgical patients is relatively novel.
