Assessing nerve damage from chemotherapy in cancer patients

Evaluation of Chemotherapy Induced Neuropathy in Solid Cancer Patients

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the severity of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in patients with solid cancers such as head and neck, breast, and prostate. Participants will undergo nerve conduction tests and assessments of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) expression before and after their fourth cycle of chemotherapy. The study will track changes in neuropathy symptoms and biochemical markers to understand the impact of chemotherapy on nerve health. The findings may help identify risk factors and improve management strategies for CIPN.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old who are scheduled to receive at least four cycles of chemotherapy for solid tumors.

Not a fit: Patients with pre-existing neuropathy, psychiatric illnesses, or significant comorbid conditions such as long-standing diabetes or renal and hepatic disease may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better understanding and management of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, improving quality of life for cancer patients.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, this specific approach focusing on biochemical markers and gene expression is relatively novel.
