What this trial studies
This study evaluates the impact of technical walking aids on the development of carpal tunnel syndrome in adults undergoing rehabilitation. It aims to assess clinical, electrophysiological, and anatomical changes in the median nerve before and after the use of these devices. Patients who are new to using walking aids will be monitored over a one-month period to identify any pressure-induced changes that may lead to entrapment neuropathies. The study utilizes nerve conduction studies, ultrasonography, and clinical assessments to gather comprehensive data on the effects of walking aids.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation unit who require a walking aid for at least one month and have at least one functional upper limb.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those currently using walking aids may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could help identify risks associated with walking aids and improve rehabilitation protocols to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
How similar studies have performed: While there is some evidence regarding the short-term effects of walking aids, this study explores a broader population and is considered novel in its approach.
