What this trial studies
This early Phase 1 clinical trial aims to evaluate the impact of social content in stories on the listening comprehension abilities of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Participants will listen to stories that vary in social content while viewing pictures and will answer comprehension questions. The study will also assess individual differences in nonverbal cognition, hearing status, autism severity, language abilities, and social communication skills to better understand how these factors influence comprehension outcomes. The findings could provide insights into tailored educational strategies for improving comprehension in autistic children.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 9 to 12 with a community or educational diagnosis of autism who use verbal phrase-level spoken language.
Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those with significant cognitive disabilities, uncorrected visual impairments, or those who speak more than one language.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved listening comprehension strategies for autistic children, enhancing their academic and social outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been pilot studies examining comprehension in autistic individuals, this specific approach of contrasting social content in stories is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
