Assessing heart function in swimmers with pulmonary edema

Cardiac Function in Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema (SIPE) - a Case Control Study

Observational Dalarna County Council, Sweden · NCT05391737

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate cardiac function in individuals experiencing swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE) during Sweden's largest open water swimming event, Vansbrosimningen. It will compare cardiac function in symptomatic swimmers diagnosed with SIPE to asymptomatic swimmers using echocardiography, electrocardiograms, and cardiac biomarkers. The study seeks to uncover the prevalence and severity of myocardial dysfunction associated with SIPE, as well as to establish a better understanding of cardiac evaluations needed for affected individuals.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include swimmers who experience respiratory symptoms during or after swimming at the Vansbrosimningen event and are diagnosed with SIPE.

Not a fit: Patients who are asymptomatic and have no signs of pulmonary edema or respiratory symptoms during swimming may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved cardiac evaluation protocols for swimmers experiencing SIPE, enhancing patient safety and management.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically on SIPE, studies on immersion pulmonary edema have indicated potential cardiac dysfunction, suggesting this approach may yield valuable insights.
