Assessing Diaphragmatic Breathing Pressures at the Esophageal-Gastric Junction
Establishing Pressures at the Esophagogastric Junction During Diaphragmatic Breathing Using High-resolution Esophageal Manometry
This study is testing different breathing positions and techniques to see which ones help adults with swallowing and reflux issues by measuring pressures in their esophagus.

What this trial studies
This study aims to identify the optimal positions and techniques for diaphragmatic breathing that generate the highest pressures at the esophageal-gastric junction (EGJ) using high-resolution esophageal manometry. Adult participants will undergo a series of swallowing tests and breathing maneuvers while their esophageal pressures are measured. The study will also include validated surveys to evaluate symptoms related to dysphagia and gastroesophageal reflux. The findings could help improve breathing techniques for patients with esophageal motility disorders.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who are undergoing high-resolution esophageal manometry.
Not a fit: Patients with prior esophageal or gastric surgery, major concomitant illnesses, or those unable to provide informed consent may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance treatment strategies for patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux and dysphagia by optimizing diaphragmatic breathing techniques.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of assessing diaphragmatic breathing pressures is innovative, similar studies have not been widely reported, indicating this may be a novel investigation.
