Assessing clotting in veins during cardiac arrest

Intravascular Clotting Detected in Point-of-care Ultrasound as a Marker of the Timing and Severity of Cardiac Arrest and an Indicator of Futile Resuscitation

Observational Medical University of Gdansk · NCT06406920

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the incidence of intravascular clotting in deep veins of patients who experience cardiac arrest, both during resuscitation and after death declaration. It will compare the outcomes of resuscitation in patients with and without detected clotting, as well as determine the timing of clot formation in relation to cardiac arrest. The study utilizes point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to assess clotting without interrupting chest compressions, providing valuable insights into the severity of cardiac arrest and the potential futility of resuscitation efforts.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients experiencing cardiac arrest in the emergency department, regardless of the cause.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the assessment of cardiac arrest severity and improve decision-making regarding resuscitation efforts.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of ultrasound in resuscitation is established, this specific approach to assessing intravascular clotting during cardiac arrest is novel and has not been extensively tested.
