What this trial studies
The TRACKFRAILTY project aims to quantify the prevalence of physical frailty among individuals living in residential care facilities in Portugal's Cova da Beira subregion. It will involve a cross-sectional study to gather data on frailty prevalence and a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of different volumes of strength training in reversing frailty. Participants will include men and women aged 50 and above who can provide informed consent. The study will also analyze various factors that predict frailty status and determine the optimal strength training volume for health benefits.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are men and women aged 50 and above residing in residential care facilities in the Cova da Beira subregion, who are either non-frail, pre-frail, or frail.
Not a fit: Patients with severe dementia or those who are hospitalized and bedridden may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this project could lead to improved physical health and quality of life for frail elderly residents in care facilities.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with strength training interventions in frail elderly populations, indicating a promising approach.
