Anemia after bariatric surgery
Postoperative Anemia After Bariatric Surgery
We will follow people aged 16–70 having sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass to see how often anemia develops soon after surgery and over the long term and what factors predict it.

What this trial studies
This observational study will enroll patients aged 16–70 who are scheduled for sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and who are not anemic at baseline. Investigators will collect baseline clinical data and blood tests and will monitor participants at multiple postoperative time points to document short- and long-term anemia incidence. The study will analyze patient characteristics, surgical factors, and laboratory changes to identify risk factors associated with developing anemia. Findings aim to clarify real-world rates of anemia after bariatric procedures and inform monitoring and prevention strategies.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people aged 16–70 who plan to have sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and who do not have anemia before surgery.
Not a fit: Patients who already have anemia at baseline or who are not undergoing these specific bariatric procedures are unlikely to directly benefit from this study's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, results could help clinicians identify patients at higher risk and implement monitoring or supplementation to prevent or treat anemia earlier.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that anemia is a common complication after bariatric surgery and have identified some risk factors, but reported incidence rates vary and long-term prospective data are comparatively limited.
